The present work depicts a group of elegant Javanese dancers at rest. Behind them, hanging from a frame, are two gongs - part of the gamelan ensemble. Named for gamel (meaning 'hammer'), the hypnotic effects and distinctive sound of gamelan music enchanted western audiences, notably the composer Claude Debussy.

The darker palette of this work suggests it was likely painted circa 1916 before Israels' journey to the Dutch East Indies, when he was in close contact with Indonesians in the Netherlands.
