What Does It Take to Become a Great Artist? Inside Sotheby’s & Yale’s Landmark Benefit Auction

15 MAY | NEW YORK

What does it actually take to become a great artist? Students, faculty and alumni from the Yale School of Art reflect on the discipline, sacrifice, failure and financial realities behind artistic greatness. From years-long projects to the pressure of tuition costs, the conversation reveals the hidden labor behind the works we see hanging in galleries and museums.

This May, Sotheby’s partners with Yale School of Art for a benefit auction supporting scholarships and the vision of a debt-free MFA education for future artists. Through reflections on perseverance, community and creative ambition, a portrait emerges of one of the world’s most influential art programs — and of what becomes possible when artists are given the freedom to fully focus on their work.
