Can Art Float? Calder and Forgetmat Play with Gravity

Paris | 23 October 2026

What happens when sculpture seems to float, and the human body becomes part of the composition? In the world of Alexander Calder, movement transforms metal into something almost weightless. French multidisciplinary artist Mathieu Forget, known as Forgetmat, brings a different kind of levitation to the encounter, creating images that blur the boundaries between contemporary art, dance and photography.

Known as “The Flying Man,” Forgetmat has built a distinctive visual language around the unexpected, collaborating with houses including Gucci, Prada and Berluti. Here, Calder’s iconic mobiles meet a contemporary imagination drawn to balance, suspension and the poetry of movement. Somewhere between stillness and flight, the familiar begins to feel wonderfully unfamiliar.

This gravity-defying Calder masterpiece, Mobile, is a highlight of the Surrealism and Its Legacy auction taking place at Sotheby's Paris on 23 October, presented by CELINE.
