A Rediscovered Rubens: Italian Themes on Flemish Terms

New York | 29 January

In this episode of Anatomy of an Artwork, discover the bold coloration and meticulous detail of Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ Virgin and Christ Child, With Saints Elizabeth and John the Baptist. Recently rediscovered, this outstanding example of Rubens earlier work will be offered as a highlight of Sotheby’s Master Paintings Evening Sale in New York. As it has not been publicly exhibited since 1951, Virgin and Christ Child represents a critical addition to Rubens scholarship and will appear in the forthcoming new volume of the Corpus Rubenianum catalogue raisonné.
