Andrew Graham-Dixon Reacts to Rembrandt's Unfinished Masterpiece

1 JULY 2026 | LONDON

Begun in Leiden and abandoned before it could fully come into focus, this early Rembrandt holds the traces of decisions mid-thought — figures blocked in with urgency, faces hovering between presence and possibility. Look closely and the illusion of a finished masterpiece slips, replaced by something far rarer: the sensation of standing inside the artist’s process.

And then, almost casually, Rembrandt himself appears. A young man at the edge of the composition, turning outward as if aware of being watched centuries later. Around him, a cast drawn from his own life — his mother, familiar models, a domestic world recast as sacred drama. The painting has lived many lives since it left his hands, but today it offers something remarkably direct: not just an image, but a mind at work.

'Let The Little Children Come Unto Me' is part of the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings and Sculpture Evening at Sotheby’s London on July 1st.
