Hiroshi Sugimoto, Polar Bear, 1977

Polar Bear was one of the first pictures Hiroshi Sugimoto took when he arrived in New York in 1974. Fascinated by the dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History, he attempted to replicate them on film, in the series “Dioramas”. To achieve this, he photographed stuffed animals with long exposure times, and precice framing to give the perfect illusion that the animals had been photographed in their natural habitat.

Hiroshi Sugimoto, Time Exposed, 1991

Marc Riboud, Washington, 1967
