Marking Milestones

Gifts with special resonance to salute a centenary, a birth year or anniversary: first edition books, collectible timepieces and rare vintages.

In celebration of its fiftieth anniversary, Porsche Design presents two extraordinary design icons. An exceptionally restored Porsche 911 S 2.4 Targa, dating from 1972, and a unique Chronograph 1 – 911 S 2.4 Targa based on the legendary Porsche Design Chronograph I, also dating from the year in which Porsche Design was founded.

The two design classics not only pay homage to the close collaboration between the brands Porsche Design and the sports car manufacturer Porsche, but are also intrinsically linked by their shared heritage with Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the founder of Porsche Design and designer of the legendary Porsche 911.

Triumphs of Human Endeavour

Priceless treasures encapsulate some of the most momentous events in the making of the modern world.

Celebrated stuntman Stan Barrett forged a deep friendship with legendary actor, Paul Newman, with their shared love of cars, speed and adventure. The two Hollywood heroes were also passionate about smaller mechanical marvels.

On 17 December 1979, Barrett made racing history, breaking the sound barrier on land. Clocking 739.66 MPH in his Budweiser Rocket Car, he sported two Rolex watches worn for luck – gifts from his friend, Paul Newman.

ROLEX, A stainless-steel chronograph wristwatch, circa 1969. Estimate $300,000–500,000.

ROLEX, Reference 1675 GMT-Master ‘Pepsi’, a stainless steel automatic dual time wristwatch with bracelet, circa 1977. Estimate $50,000–100,000.

ROLEX, Reference 1675 GMT-Master, a yellow gold automatic dual time wristwatch with bracelet, circa 1979. Estimate $50,000–100,000.

“Inextricably linked to a feat of human exploration, these watches represent a slice of American history itself.”

More than just the basis of evolutionary biology, On the Origin of Species reshaped scientific thought and is one of the most influential texts ever published. This extract was chosen by Darwin as his definitive statement—it represents the passage he most closely associated with himself and his legacy.

CHARLES DARWIN, Autograph manuscript leaf, being an excerpt from On the Origin of Species, [circa 18–22 October 1865]. Estimate $600,000–800,000.

HERMAN MELVILLE, Moby-Dick; or, the Whale. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1851. First American edition. Estimate $20,000–30,000.

“Moby-Dick stands as one of the giants of 19th Century literature. Ishmael’s voice serves as the embodiment of human endurance, and the desire to discover all that lies beyond the horizon.”

Starting from 30 November, a series of auction highlights from Luxury Week and Design Week will be on view in our York Avenue Galleries.
