Jean-Michel Basquiat

Basquiat illustrated and printed this flyer for his band Gray in 1980.<ul><li>Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988).</li><li>Unsigned from an edition of unknown size.</li><li>Xerox printed on paper.</li><li>Accompanied by a letter of provenance.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Executed similarly in the manner of his well-documented Anti-Product Cards of the period, Basquiat draws over a found image, then employs his famous William Burroughs-style "cut-up" technique, completing the piece by abstractly scrawling the word "Gray" above. First called Channel 9, then Test Pattern, the Basquiat co-founded group settled on the name "Gray" after Basquiat's fondness for the textbook Gray's Anatomy. Gray was an experimental New York Noise band defined by jazz improvisation, spoken word poetry, sound looping and everything in between. Gray members included co-founder Michael Holman, Nick Taylor, Shannon Dawson, Wayne Clifford and eventually Vincent Gallo. "Jean-Michel did all the posters for the band" (see Fretz, Basquiat A Biography p.40), and the group most notably played the likes of historic downtown clubs such as CBGB, The Mudd Club, Squat Theater and Hurrah's. The late Glenn O'Brien once noted that Basquiat approached music as a "Picasso-Charlie Parker-Miles Davis" collage. Basquiat, who played clarinet, synthesizer and a number of hybrid instruments, once said of Gray, "We were trying to be incomplete, abrasive, oddly beautiful." A description much in line with the nature of his art going forward. Based on the nature of how "Gray" is written, it's likely Basquiat was influenced by the mysterious religious-zealot-turned-urban-legend/street artist famous for key scratching "Pray" on hundreds of New York City building doors and phone booths in a similar style.

Yayoi Kusama

A dizzying poster of Kusama's iconic polka-dotted soft sculptures, advertising the opening of the 1965 installation at the Castellane Gallery of her first ever mirror room, hand-addressed by Kusama in 1965 to the Museum of Modern Art.<ul><li>Produced by Castellane Gallery in 1965.</li><li>Hand-addressed by the artist to the Museum of Modern Art on verso, with 1965 Grand Central Station postmark.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Kusama's exhibition, titled in full "Infinity Mirror Room —Phalli's Field (Floor Show)," was documented in a series of photographs of the artist reclining on her own "phallus meadow" in a red leotard — the most famous and striking images of her work from that era. In her autobiography, Kusama describes the installation that marked the beginning of arguably her best-known and most popular series of works: "The walls of the room were mirrors, and sprouting from the floor were thousands of white canvas phallic forms covered with red polka dots. The mirrors reflected them infinitely, summoning up a sublime, miraculous field of phalluses. People could walk barefoot through the phallus meadow, becoming one with the work and experiencing their own figures and movement as part of the sculpture. Wandering into this infinite wonderland, where a grandiose aggregation of human sexual symbols had been transformed into a humorous, polka-dotted field, viewers found themselves spellbound by the imagination as it exorcised sexual sickness in the naked light of day." The New York Times described Kusama's mid-'60s work as the "awful vision of a self-perpetuating infinity," but they meant they liked it. The verso of the poster is addressed by Kusama to MoMA, which now holds numerous works by the artist in their permanent collection and mounted her site-specific installation Narcissus Garden at PS1 in 2018. An important association of this scarce document for an early and landmark show from this major artist — distinctly rare addressed by Kusama.

Although it was originally billed as a children's book, The Hobbit attracted a varied audience and has been wildly popular since its initial publication. Tolkien built upon the tradition of fantasy literature developed by George MacDonald, Lewis Carroll and the folk tales of Arabian Nights by inventing a new language—Elvish—and making it accessible for modern-day readers. Such creativity brought rave reviews for The Hobbit, which sold out of its original print run of 1,500 copies three months after publication.

David Bowie

From there, the archive progresses through the end of the 1980s, with the bulk of the collection concentrating on the mid- to late '70s as Bowie entered his Thin White Duke period and, through 1976-79, appeared to grow more glamorous and vampiric by the hour. Most images show Bowie in rehearsal or performance around the Station to Station / Berlin trilogy era(s) but a substantial minority capture him out and about, including one striking image from a Moscow street. Several pictures show Bowie with other famous (Keith Richards, Tina Turner, John McEnroe) or once-famous figures (the actress Sydne Rome). Many include a notation on the place or context, as well as date -- e.g.: "David Bowie at the play "Hurlyburly" at the Westwood Playhouse / Dec 2, 1988" -- and the vast majority of undated photographs can be easily placed within a year or two by tracking the width and enormity of the trousers. The latest-dated photograph in the collection was taken at the American Cinematheque's Moving Picture Ball at the Century Plaza Hotel, in 1991.
