S panning Old Master paintings, masterpieces of ébénisterie and menuiserie from the most talented craftsmen, rare books and great masters of contemporary art and design, the exceptional collection of Hubert Guerrand-Hermès will be presented at auction from 13 to 19 December.
A curious and enthusiastic collector from a dynasty where refinement reigns supreme, Hubert Guerrand-Hermès spent his entire life amassing a unique collection of almost 1,000 works of art housed in the Hôtel de Lannion in the heart of Paris surrounded by interiors designed by François-Joseph Graf.
The collector's lifelong passion for Marie-Caroline De Bourbon, Duchesse de Berry (1798-1860), a fantastic historical icon, shines through in every room of the Hôtel de Lannion, which houses her memorabilia, portraits, porcelain and, above all, her fantastic library of hundreds of books.
Hubert Guerrand-Hermès was also one of the first to collect sculptures by François-Xavier Lalanne, combining these pieces with those by Anselm Kiefer and paintings by Soulages, Fontana and Alexandre-François Desportes, Louis XIV's favourite painter. The rooms contained furniture of extraordinary provenance, such as a chair from the apartments of Queen Marie-Antoinette at Versailles and a suite of six chairs belonging to the comte d’Artois from his château de Bagatelle.
