S otheby’s is pleased to present a new, cross-category auction bringing together masterworks encompassing the most renowned artists from the late 19th century to the most in-demand contemporary artists working today. A spectacular Impressionist work by Claude Monet gives way to a remarkable large scale Milton Avery seascape as masterpieces by Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder, two artists whose respective aesthetic languages had huge bearing upon one another, are presented in tandem. Abstract, process driven, and figurative works abound, as Vincent Van Gogh and Mark Bradford, Edvard Munch and Glenn Ligon, Mark Chagall and Barkley Hendricks, are all shown together, creating a tableau that tells the story of artistic progression over the last 150 years.
