Leading the Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art auction in London on 6 October is an extraordinarily rare biographical painting by Amrita Sher-Gil, one of India’s most important 20th-century painters and the mother of modern Indian art. This magnificent painting was kept in the collection of Sher-Gil’s fellow student at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Boris Taslitzky. The Franco-Russian artist was Sher-Gil’s muse, lover, and artistic comrade until they parted in 1934, one year after this painting was made.
