Sotheby’s Modern British & Irish Art department comprises our flagship sales of Modern & Post-War British Art, alongside dedicated annual sales of Irish Art and Scottish Art. In addition, our Made in Britain sales offer a cross-section of painting, prints, ceramics and design produced in Britain in the 20th century. Overall, our calendar of sales offer both consignors and collectors unrivalled contexts in which to sell and source modern British and Irish art. We are also pleased to conduct private sales throughout the year.
The passion and expertise of our specialists, combined with the global reach of our auctions, has consistently produced outstanding results and many auction records. The department also has a longstanding legacy of offering market-defining single owner collections. Major highlights over the last decade include the ground-breaking Evill/Frost Collection, 2011; Lowry: the A.J. Thompson Collection, 2014; Daughter of History: Mary Soames and the Legacy of Churchill, 2014; the international phenomenon Bowie/Collector, 2016; Howard Hodgkin: Portrait of the Artist, 2017; Yeats: The Family Collection, 2017 and The Colourists: Pictures from the Harrison Collection, 2018.
Our Modern & Post-War British Art sales are held in June and November and our Made in Britain sales in March and September. Our Irish Art and Scottish Art sales are held in London alongside our Modern & Post-War British Art sale in November. We are the only international auction house to hold dedicated sales of Irish Art and Scottish Art, which include travelling exhibitions in Dublin and Edinburgh respectively, enabling us to promote them on a national and international level.
