Anthony Hopkins

Two letters by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Anthony+Hopkins&amp;pfilters.dateRange=past" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Anthony Hopkins</a>, to <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Peter+Cushing&amp;pfilters.dateRange=past" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Peter Cushing</a>, together with a postcard and a typed note from Hopkins’ secretary, all reflecting the warm correspondence between the two actors.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 4.</li><li>Anthony Hopkins (Welsh).</li><li>London, [1987–93].</li></ul> Two autograph letters signed, both on personal stationery, with a signed autograph postcard and a typed note from Hopkins’ secretary to Cushing’s. Containing Hopkins’ striking tribute to Cushing’s performance in Hammer’s The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959), which he credits as an early and lasting influence on his own approach to acting. A revealing and affectionate series of communications between Anthony Hopkins and Peter Cushing, prompted by a letter Cushing wrote to Hopkins in the summer of 1987. In his reply, Hopkins thanks Cushing for his “lovely letter” and, in a passage of unusual biographical interest, recalls the profound impression made on him by Cushing’s performance as Sherlock Holmes in Hammer’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. Writing of a time before he had even conceived of becoming an actor, Hopkins remembers being so struck by the “precision and perfectionism” of Cushing’s performance that, when he himself later entered the profession, he consciously held it in mind, spending “hours rehearsing details” alone until they had been absorbed into the “psyche”. The second letter, written two years later, congratulates Cushing on a Channel 4 interview, after which Hopkins watched The Hound of the Baskervilles again, praising Cushing’s “magnificent Sherlock Holmes” and remarking how lovely it was to see him “so well and so entertaining”. The accompanying postcard, written in May 1992, thanks Cushing for his congratulations, almost certainly on Hopkins’ Academy Award for The Silence of the Lambs; the typed note of 1993 expresses Hopkins’ regret that prior commitments prevented him from attending Cushing’s surprise eightieth birthday celebration. Taken together, the group offers an intimate glimpse of the mutual admiration and enduring regard between two distinguished actors, each associated, in different generations, with the great Gothic tradition: Cushing as Van Helsing in Hammer’s Dracula films, Hopkins in Coppola’s 1992 Dracula. A warm, uncommon, and revealing collection from one Van Helsing to another and a superb insight into Hopkins’ acting inspirations.

The run of the play was cut short as a result of Wilde's arrest and prosecution. The scandal dampened enthusiasm for Wilde's work until after his death in 1900, when interest in his work began to revive.

Frank supported himself at this time with sporadic commercial work for supportive art directors, including Cipe Pineles at Charm magazine, Alexey Brodovitch at Harper's Bazaar, and Lou Silverstein at The New York Times. When Lou Silverstein died in 2011, Robert Frank sent a note to his memorial service saying, 'He gave me moral support as well as financial – and this made my life in New York City possible.' New York Is gathers a series of print advertisements featuring photographs by Robert Frank for a campaign run by The New York Times to target and attract prospective advertisers. Frank's photographs are paired with advertising copy extolling the city's virtues, each ending with the line 'New York is The New York Times. New Yorkers live by it. It serves them with the most news. It sells them with the most advertising.'

Although the title-pages states 'Second and third editions', in fact the first five editions are really only different impressions of the same edition. Apart from the title-pages the only differences are in the text where the type in the earliest impressions shows fewer signs of wear and damage. The title-pages were altered to encourage sales.

Alexander Calder illustrates this monumental artist's book with nine full-page etchings, whose simplified linear motifs deftly convey the emotional power of the story.

Diane Arbus

A postcard from photographer <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Diane+Arbus&amp;pfilters.dateRange=past" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Diane Arbus</a> to Art Director John Gerbino.<ul><li>Diane Arbus (American).</li><li>Autograph letter signed on an unmailed postcard.</li><li>Presented unframed.</li></ul> An autograph postcard from Diane Arbus to art director John Gerbino after Gerbino commissioned Arbus in spring 1971 to photograph Barbara Hackman Franklin and Germaine Greer for features in New Woman magazine. 'Barbara Hackman Franklin, President Nixon's New Woman' ran, but the Germaine Greer photographs were not published. Diane Arbus confided to Allan Arbus that Greer 'was fun and is terrific looking but I managed to make [her] otherwise.' According to Arthur Lubow, when the magazine's publisher interviewed Greer 'she recoiled at the feminist's brashness.' In 1964, Barbara Hackman Franklin was one of the first women to earn an MBA from Harvard Business School, one of only 12 women among 680 men in the first graduating class after faculty voted to allow women to study on the campus. After moving to New York, she held positions at the Singer Company and First National City Bank (now Citibank). The absence of professional networking opportunities for women led Franklin and her friend Charlotte Browne-Mayers of Standard Oil Company to organize their own networking group, hosting monthly meetings for former classmates and other working women. In 1971, President Richard Nixon appointed her to lead an effort to recruit and appoint more women for high-level government positions. Altogether, she has served in the administrations of five United States Presidents, and in 2017, Time Magazine named her one of the '50 Women Who Made American Political History'. Diane Arbus and John Gerbino began working together in 1964 when he was a designer at Harper's Bazaar. Later, as art director of Essence magazine, Gerbino commissioned Arbus to take photographs for two features: How Radical is Black Youth?published in November 1970 and Conversation: Ida Lewis and Rev. Albert B. Cleage, Jr. published in December 1970.

A tale of betrayal among smugglers – the author’s first novel, preceded only by a book of poems entitled Babbling April. The title for the book was taken from Sir Thomas Browne’s (1605-1682) ‘There’s another man within me that’s angry with me’. The film adaptation of the book, starring Michael Redgrave &amp; Richard Attenborough, was made in 1947.
