rectangular with cut corners, the lid painted en plein with travellers taking a rest by a water fountain below trees, including two young men on a donkey's and a camel's back, the biblical village of Cana of Galilei against a pale pink sky in the background, based on the engraving 'Aspect d'une Partie de village de Cana en Galilée' by V. Pillement, J.L.C. Pauquet and F.N.B. Dequevauviller after Louis-François Cassas (1799), within opaque white and black enamel rims, on an engine-turned gold ground formerly enamelled in translucent dark blue, outer taille d'épargne lozenge and leaf border, the later base decorated with reeded panels and hatched engraving to sides and a central geometric floral ornament within lozenge pattern to underside, the lid with maker's mark RL&C, the base with remnants of a Hanau flowerhead mark and traces of later control marks to rims,
