Geological Observations on South America. Being the third part of the Geology of the Voyage of the Beagle, under the command of Capt. Fitzroy, R.N. during the years 1832 to 1836. London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1846


8vo (215 x 137mm). Engraved folding map, four folding engraved plates, one folding hand-colored lithographic geological cross-section; without the publisher's catalogue, which it only occasionally present, some faint offsetting, short closed tear to map. Contemporary half green calf and marbled paper-covered boards, marbled endpapers; rebacked preserving original spine, extremities rubbed.


First edition. This is the third part of Darwin's geological results of the Beagle voyage. The three parts were published over five years and comprise The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs (1842), Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands Visited (1844), and this work. They were eventually published together in one volume in 1851.
