of ovoid form, overlaid in opaque white and carved through to the amethyst/dark red glass underneath with a figure representing Luna, wearing a star in her hair, scantily clad by flowing fabric, seated among clouds and four distant stars, incised signed Geo Woodall., the rim with a band of half-flowerheads, the foot with a band of leaves, embossed script "LUNA"/ THOS. WEBB & SONS. mark

This vase can be identified as GW008, as numbered in the factory records. Woodall was paid £7 for his work on the vase, though the sale price is not recorded, as transcribed in Christopher Woodall Perry, The Cameo Glass of Thomas and George Woodall, Shepton Beauchamp 2000, p. 127. A similar figure was used by Woodall for his vase titled Night, GW0023, as a companion vase to Morning, both completed in the same year as the present vase, illustrated in photographs taken by Woodall, reproduced in Perry, ibid., p. 104. Ray and Lee Grover in English Cameo Glass, New York 1980, p. 63, show that "Night" as a titled subject is recorded eight times, and used by George Woodall and the Woodall team, though "Luna" appears only once in the records.
