Description
of slender ovoid form, overlaid in opaque white and carved through to the translucent dark red/brown glass underneath with a figure of a scantily clad siren playing a harp on a rock edge, perched above waves with five sea birds in flight above, incised signed Geo. Woodall, the rims edged in white overlay reserving formal draped swags or scroll bands, the underside with incised title SYRENA.

This vase can be identified as GW157, as numbered in the factory records, and was completed by January 20th, 1914. Woodall was paid £10.10s for his work on the vase which had a sale price of £26, as reproduced Perry, op. cit., p. 129. The subject is recorded with various spellings, including 'Sirene', 'Syrena' and 'Syrena', and a plaque of the subject titled Syrene Song of The Sea, GW161(?), was completed by Woodall around the same time as the present vase, made for George Woodall's daughter Miss Beatrice (Alice) Woodall. The plaque subsequently entered the Bertram Wolfson Collection, Massachusetts, illustrated in Beard, op. cit., col. pl. B, no. 18. A similar vase was sold at Sotheby's London, February 1, 1971, lot 118, illustrated in Ray and Lee Grover in English Cameo Glass, New York 1980, p. 305, C306, as well as another vase with the subject, p. 163, fig. 127 (where identified as GW25).
