Description
Aldo Manuzio
Institutionum grammaticarum libri quatuor. Addito in fine De octo partium orationis constructione libello Erasmo Roterodamo authore. Venice: (heirs of Pietro Ravani, January) 1545
8vo (149 x 103mm.), title within a woodcut border, first quire printed in red and black, with blank leaf F8, woodcut printer's device on F7, strip of paper pasted to foot of title-page to cover an inscription, nineteenth-century half red calf, flat spine, occasional light staining, a few small paper repairs, binding somewhat rubbed
One of numerous sixteenth-century editions of Aldus's Latin grammar (first printed in 1493 by Andrea Torresano), followed by his Greek grammar and with his short introduction to Hebrew at the end. The section on the eight parts of speech purporting to be by Erasmus (with his name crossed through in this copy) is actually his revision of a work by William Lily.
