Description

A Decorated Ketubbah from Modena, 1788

Celebrating the marriage of Yom Tov ben Ephraim Sanguinetti and Armelina bat Moses Sanguinetti on Friday, 6 Kislev 5549 (December 5, 1788).

The text of this elegant marriage contract is surrounded by two smaller borders of delicately drawn meandering vines and floral motifs and a wider lush border of pomegranates and tulips. Two bands of biblical verses relating to marriage separate the floral borders. This finely drawn monochrome scheme of decoration originated in Modena, a city in north-central Italy where the Jewish community enjoyed the protection of the House of Este. The bride and the groom were both members of the wealthy Modenese Sanguinetti family. In 1755, the Sanguinetti family owned three textile mills in Modena and a private house of prayer. The family emblem, a wolf rampant confronting a verdant tree, appears at the top of the ketubbah.
