Like the preceding painting, this work formed part of the scheme of large decorative panels on the theme of the four seasons in the dining room of the family home belonging to Ramon Casas in Barcelona. The present painting is a fragment of the central panel depicting summer. The artist chose to paint these flowering wild oleanders at the point in summer when their colours are at their brightest. The entire composition was reproduced in no. 58 of the journal Pèl & Ploma, 15 August 1900, and we are thus able to date the work fairly accurately between 1898, when the building was completed, and the publication date of this edition. The caption to the photograph reads: ‘L’ISTIU [‘summer’ in Catalan], a glimpse of the décor in the Menjador de Can Casas’. In a cut-out space beneath the wild oleanders, which based on the architectural adaptations probably corresponded to the original shape of the ceiling, the journal’s editors added a few lines by Joan Maragall that chime with the décor : ‘The promises of April were kept beneath the paternal heat of the sun: fruits have sweetened and the month of July is filled with love’.

Cette œuvre, comme les précédentes, faisait partie d'un des grands panneaux décoratifs sur le thème des saisons de la salle à manger de la maison familiale de Ramon Casas à Barcelone. Notre tableau est un fragment de la partie centrale du panneau consacré à l'été. Le peintre choisit de peindre ces lauriers-roses sauvages, en fleurs et au moment de l’été où leurs couleurs sont les plus vives. L’ensemble de la composition a été reproduit dans le numéro 58 de la revue Pèl & Ploma, du 15 août 1900 (fig .1). Ce qui permet de dater assez précisément l’œuvre entre 1898, année de la remise du bâtiment a été et la date de la parution de ce numéro.

La légende de la photographie indique : "L'ISTIU [l’été en catalan], fragment du décor du Menjador de Can Casas". Dans l'espace découpé sous les lauriers roses sauvages, qui correspondait sans doute à la forme originale du plafond en raison de son ajustement architectural, les rédacteurs de la Revue cite quelques vers de Joan Maragall en accord avec ce décor : "Les promesses d'avril ont été tenues

sous l'ardeur paternelle du soleil : les fruits sont sucrés et tout amour remplit le mois de juillet."
