The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:

Cornelis Massys

Flight into Egypt

Oil on panel, in a modern gilt wood and velvet frame in good condition.

The oak panel is in very good condition; comprised of one piece of wood, it is flat and evenly chamfered on all sides.

The paint layer is stable and secure.

Overall, the painting is in a very good preserved condition.

Minor recent careful strengthening to some of the branches and trunks of the trees can be detected and under u-v light a small scattering of minor

restorations can be seen, applied to reduce horizontal wood grain and pin prick losses.

The paint texture, visible particularly through the foliage, is very well preserved.

Some of the more fragile 'top note' glazes have been slightly compromised, but chromatic and tonal nuances are intact and fine details are unadulterated.

The composition is crisp and the painting presents well.
