The former painting is directly inspired by an engraving of this view by Jacques Callot (1592–1635).1 The 13th-century Tour de Nesle was demolished in 1665; it stood on the south bank of the River Seine, opposite the Palais du Louvre, along the Quai de Conti between the current Pont Neuf and the Pont des Arts. A signed painting by Casteels depicting this same view is in the Musée du Louvre.2
