oil on paper, laid down on canvas

unframed: 42.4 x 29.4 cm.; 16¾ x 11⅝ in.

framed: 48.7 x 35.6 cm.; 19¼ x 14 in.

The paper is laid down on canvas, which has a firm relining. The paint surface is relatively clean, with a discoloured varnish. Some of the darker browns of the shadows appear to be slightly worn, but the paint in the background was generally thinly applied. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a rather streaky varnish, underneath which small spots of retouching are visible, scattered in the aforementioned areas of darker pigment, and also a few scattered in the spaniel, the shadows beneath it, and in the lower right corner. In overall good condition.
