Stags and a hind by a pool in a forest clearing

oil on canvas

unframed: 101.8 x 119.7 cm.; 40⅛ x 47⅛ in.

framed: 123.7 x 141 cm.; 48¾ x 55½ in.

The canvas has quite a firm relining, the paint surface is slightly dirty, and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There is a degree of wear visible throughout the work, where the canvas has become more apparent. There are a number of small, discoloured retouchings visible in the sky, which follow the network of craquelure. And in raking light it is also possible to discern some rather more pronounced areas of craquelure in some of the darks of the trees, which have been retouched; the same surface texture, caused by retouchings, is found around the margins of the canvas. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that there are in fact two campaigns of restoration in the sky - one comprised of those restorations visible to the naked eye, and another which fluoresces darkly under ultraviolet light, in a fairly extensive network of retouchings through the upper section of the painting. The retouchings in the foliage and around the margins are also confirmed. The animals themselves contain far fewer retouchings, however. The painting is in overall fair condition.
