Description
John Ruskin
Autograph letter signed, to the artist and publisher Harry Quilter
severely criticising his efforts, but praising his sincerity (“You are innocently and simply - not vulgarly - arrogant. Else you never at present would have thought of writing - still less of publishing your sketches - but only of learning more, and drawing better”), 2 pages, 8vo, Brantwood, Coniston, Lancashire, 16 July [no year], slightly soiled
Harry Quilter is perhaps best known for his feud with J.M. Whistler. Quilter bought Whistler’s house after legal costs resulting from a libel case against Ruskin forced him to sell it. Whistler accused Quilter of vandalising the house through re-decoration.
