number 1 from an edition of 1

patinated and galvanized copper

monogrammed CL, impressed LALANNE, dated 2006 and numbered 1/1

13 ¼ x 12 ⅜ x 11 ½ in. (33.6 x 31.4 x 29.2 cm)

Overall in very good condition. The present Choupatte is a unique work by the artist and a masterful example of Claude Lalanne’s use of galvanized copper. The Choupatte displays superb details from leaf veining to the highly sculptural chicken feet, achieved by the artist’s signature technique. The copper surface presents with oxidation throughout as intended by the artist. When viewed in person, the patinated and galvanized surfaces present with a range of colorations from teal to aegean blue. The copper surfaces present with irregularities that are inherent to the making and the artist’s practice. The patinated and galvanized surfaces with scattered areas of discoloration and minute losses concentrated to the upper leaf edges which partially reveal the bright copper beneath the surface. The proper left leg with a small mark of white house paint measuring approximately ½ inch. The metal tag is held by a ring encircling the proper left leg and presents with some light oxidation throughout. An iconic form by Claude Lalanne that embodies her masterful technique as a sculpture as well as her predilection for whimsical creatures. A superb example with great character and presence.
