A PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE 'LUOHAN' BOULDER
QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD
ovoid boulder carved in varying relief with a cavernous grotto sheltering the sixth luohan, Bodhidharma, seated on a mat with legs crossed under a loose robe, the left hand resting on the knee and holding a rosary, the face turned upward with a contemplative expression, amid craggy rocks and a gnarled tree, lingzhi sprigs sprouting at the reverse, the stone a very pale celadon with thin passages of russet skin
Height 5 in., 12.7 cm
The boulder is in overall good condition with natural fissures to the stone. There are possible scattered minute nicks to the extremities of the carving. Red pen inventory number to the base.
