Ría de Asturias. Las Carboneras (At the Estuary, Asturias)

signed J. Sorolla. B lower left

oil on board

Framed: 41 by 52.5cm., 16¼ by 20¾in.

Unframed: 22.5 by 34cm., 8¾ by 13½in.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Blanca Pons Sorolla, who will be including it in the forthcoming Sorolla catalogue raisonné (BPS 1669).

The board is flat and even. Ultra-violet light reveals a couple of minor strokes of retouching at the framing edges. There is some uneven fluorescence to the left of the sky and a spot at the top of the ‘ll’ of the signature, however these appear to be related to unevenness in the varnish rather than retouching. This painting is in good condition and ready to hang.

Painted in Asturias circa 1902-04, the present work depicts carboneras, women who worked unloading coal barges, and can be compared with another contemporary study of the same dimensions in the Museo Sorolla, Madrid (inv. no. 457).
