With the Hollywood Bowl lit beneath a starry sky and klieg lights cutting the darkness into bold modernist shapes, it sells Southern California at its most cinematic. The aircraft shown is a Lockheed L-49 Constellation, one of the great icons of post-war air travel and among the first pressurized airliners adapted for wide commercial use. In the 1950s, TWA turned travel into fantasy: sleek, modern, exciting and full of possibility. Los Angeles was the perfect subject, with its film-world glamour, sunshine and effortless cool. David Klein’s TWA posters are mid-century design classics, loved for their punchy color, clean forms and brilliant sense of place.

In 1977 Greg and Tim Hildebrandt were approached by 20th Century Fox to produce a new poster design for the British release of Star Wars as, apparently, George Lucas wanted something more 'comic booky' than the Tom Jung design that was used on the initial US 1 sheet movie poster. Amazingly, on a very tight deadline the Hildebrandt Brothers produced the iconic design within 72 hours. Star Wars was released in America in May 1977 and did not get released in the UK until December of the same year. By the time the film was released in the UK, the studio felt that the characters were already well known, and the Hildebrandt Brothers' artwork did not reflect this. Therefore they commissioned a completely new poster by Tom Chantrell (the Style C design). This incredibly rare original design - used mainly in London on the Underground a few months before the film's release - was then replaced by Chantrell's poster. As such, very few were initially produced and even fewer survived to this day.

The poster’s confident typography and upscale aesthetic reflect the café’s ambition to present its products as synonymous with quality, modernity, and urban refinement during a flourishing period for French advertising. Georges Nicolitch, active in the early- to mid-20th century, produced striking posters characterized by elegant figures, sharp silhouettes, and a strong Art Deco sensibility. His designs often balanced glamour with commercial clarity, making his work especially prized among collectors of vintage French advertising.

Tolkien’s achievement was not merely narrative but architectural. Drawing upon philology, medieval literature, mythology, and his own linguistic inventions, he constructed a secondary world of unprecedented depth and internal coherence. Middle-earth was not a setting but a civilisation: languages, genealogies, cosmology, and moral philosophy interwoven with epic narrative. In doing so, Tolkien effectively established the template for modern high fantasy. The trilogy’s publication history underscores its rarity. The first impression of The Fellowship of the Ring numbered only 3,000 copies; The Two Towers followed at 3,250; The Return of the King at 7,000. Le Carré strips glamour from espionage, showing it as brutal, shabby, and ethically corrosive, which helped redefine the modern spy novel. Le Carre, a reluctant inscriber, inscribed this unique copy using the opening line of the novel.

It is dated in the plate “8.5.68.” It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 50, at the lower left margin. There were also 17 artist’s proofs aside from the standard edition. This etching was printed in 1968 by the Crommelynck Brothers in France and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris the following year. This work is the 69th composition in the 347 series. The “347 Series” was, in printmaking, the undertaking which defined late Picasso. This prodigious outpouring of work, dating from March 16th–October 5th, 1968, deals with all his old themes and fantasies, adding an obsession newly central in the late 60s, the artist as voyeur. It is in this role, rather than that of a protagonist, that the artist figures in these fantastic narrations. In order to be able to work with full freedom and concentration, Picasso had his printers, the brothers Crommelynck, bring the etching plates and hand press to his farmhouse near Cannes. Complete sets of the 347 etchings are held by only a small number of museums, such as Picasso Museum in Barcelona, Spain, Picasso Museum in Paris, France, Art Institute of Chicago, United States of America and the Art Museum of Israel, Jerusalem, Israel. It was created by Picasso on the 30th March 1947 by applying pen and ink wash to zinc plate and using a scraper. It was printed by Mourlot in the same year in a limited edition of 50 impressions. There were also six artist’s proofs. This impression is the second state of ten. Only the second and fourth states were published as editions of 50. The work progressively becomes darker and more abstracted through the creative process. The paper bears the Arches watermark. Other impressions of this subject are held by the Art Institute of Chicago and Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon, United States of America. Lucas Cranach was one of the main Old Master artist’s to have provided inspiration for Picasso. The artist was first introduced to the magnificent paintings by Cranach through his dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, who would sporadically send postcards and exhibition catalogues of Cranach’s masterpieces from across Europe. On this occasion Picasso received a black and white exhibition catalogue from an exhibition in Berlin, which had included a photograph of Lucas Cranach’s David and Bathsheba painted in 1534. Illustrated with more than seven hundred hand-colored plates, it also includes the rare monograph on the Amaryllideae by Adrian Hardy Haworth that was distributed as an appendix to the second series, volume I. Robert Sweet began his career as a gardener and became a well-known horticulturist and member of the Linnean Society. Between 1826 and 1831 he 'occupied himself almost wholly in the production of botanical works, while still cultivating a limited number of plants in his garden at parson's Green, Fulham... His works included Hortus suburbanus Londinensis (1818); Geraniaceae (5 vols., 1820–30); Sweet's Hortus Britannicus (1826); Flora Australasica (1827–8); and an ornithological work, The British Warblers (1823). The botanical genus Sweetia was named in his honor by Candolle in 1825.

An archive of contemporaneous typescript copy documents, compiled by the solicitors and legal representatives acting during the London High Court proceedings initiated by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Paul+McCartney&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul McCartney</a> in December 1970 to dissolve the partnership of <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=The+Beatles&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">The Beatles</a>.<ul><li>Sold as a collection of over 300 pages of documents.</li></ul> The action, brought against John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey), and Apple Corps, sought a judicial declaration to terminate the Beatles’ business partnership and to remove American manager Allen Klein from authority over the group’s financial affairs. The collection comprises unbound loose sheets, many bearing headed titles, including: <ul><li>A nine-page copy of the original 1967 Deed of Partnership of The Beatles Limited (23 Albemarle Street, London), with facsimile signatures of the four members to pages 8–9, later noted in internal documents as the first formal written instrument of partnership.</li></ul> <ul><li>Copies of Writs issued to Lennon (then of Tittenhurst Park, Ascot; sued as John Winston Lennon, subsequently of New York), Harrison (Friar Park, Henley-on-Thames), Starkey (Round Hill, Highgate), and Apple Corps (3 Savile Row, London W1).</li></ul> <ul><li>Minutes of meetings between legal and financial representatives detailing negotiations, disputes, and strategic discussions, including the Cannes meetings (21–22 July 1971) and the ABKCO Industries meeting at Savile Row, 22 April 1971, described contemporaneously as “tense and heated.”</li></ul> <ul><li>A Draft Order (26 January 1971) requiring Mr. Klein to provide a chronological account of his involvement with the Beatles from January/February 1969 and to disclose all sums received by ABKCO in relation to the group.</li></ul> <ul><li>Internal memoranda addressing unresolved contractual questions, including the absence of a written agreement upon the departure of Pete Best and appointment of Ringo Starr; tax liabilities; royalty entanglements; studio financing; film rights disputes (including Let It Be, Hey Jude, Revolution, and Magical Mystery Tour); and the growing conflict over management transparency.</li></ul> Notably, the papers document mounting concern over ABKCO’s failure to produce full accounting records dating back to 1966, at a time when scrutiny from the Inland Revenue intensified. These documents provide a rare, contemporaneous record of the legal unravelling of the most commercially and culturally influential musical partnership of the twentieth century. While public narratives of the Beatles’ dissolution often emphasize personal tensions, this archive reveals the structural and fiduciary complexities underlying the dispute following the death of manager Brian Epstein in 1967. The minutes candidly observe: “It would be almost impossible to exaggerate the actual complexity of the various legal arrangements which have been entered into by Messrs. Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starkey…” The papers demonstrate that even after the cessation of collaborative recording, the partnership’s contractual purpose had not legally expired — raising the central question repeatedly noted in the minutes: “The question is — where is the money?” Entirely unpublished and preserved from a solicitor’s working archive, the bundle represents professional reference copies used during live proceedings. Evidence of handling — light curling to page corners — reflects active consultation during the case. Otherwise, the papers remain in overall good condition. Such working legal archives seldom survive intact outside institutional collections. As a primary source documenting the High Court action that formally ended The Beatles’ partnership, this archive stands as an exceptional artefact of modern cultural, legal, and music-industry history.
