Sotheby’s is honoured to announce the sale of Works from the Oscar Mairlot collection. From Magritte to Zao Wou-Ki. It will take place in Paris on 19 October 2018, during the FIAC.
The sale features a selection of the works lovingly assembled by Oscar Mairlot and his son. The Mairlots embodied a unique generation of Belgian collectors personified by a handful of friends and art lovers who championed modern art.
The group belongs to the rich tradition of Belgian collections formed during the interwar and post-war periods. It illustrates the keen interest of a generation of intellectuals and industrialists in "Belgian" Surrealism, embodied by René Magritte and Paul Delvaux and in Flemish Expressionism (including Constant Permeke or Edgard Tytgat), as well as the people who inspired them, such as James Ensor and Rik Wouters. The international avant-garde is present with works by Ossip Zadkine, Fernand Léger, Raoul Dufy and others.
The 1950s and 1960s also reflected the taste of a new generation, marked by Belgian and foreign artists frequently exhibited in the national galleries of the time, like Bram Bogart, Jo Delahaut, Oscar Dominguez, Victor Vasarely, Jef Verheyen, Zao Wou Ki, Serge Poliakoff, André Lanskoy and Sol LeWitt.
