A lively saleroom drove the total of the first auction at Sotheby’s Milan to include online bidding to €11,968,525, with 87.1% of lots sold. The auction saw brilliant results for Lucio Fontana and Enrico Castellani but also for Roman Pop Art, including a number of works from the most important exponents: Mario Schifano, Tano Festa and Franco Angeli. A magnificent 1961 enamel-on-canvas work Grigio 402 by Schifano sold for €627,000 and a new record was established for his Tutte Stelle series when lot 5 sold for €195,000 and also a new record for Franco Angeli. Impressive results were also recorded for Fausto Melotti’s Canone variato II, which sold for €519,000, a world record for a numbered sculpture by the artist, and Senza Titolo by Tancredi, which achieved €279,000.
Sotheby’s Milan are delighted to present the eagerly-awaited auction of Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, taking place on 25and 26 May 2016. Following the exceptional results obtained in the recent Milanese sales, the international interest for 20th-century Italian art remains solid. Burri, Fontana, Castellani, Scheggi, witnesses of a century of artistic innovation, are the lucky protagonists of today’s international art market.
The excellent results for Morandi’s timeless art, which recently earned him a retrospective at CIMA in New York, and those of Melotti, represented on the international market by Hauser and Wirth, and Vincenzo Agnetti, have driven a rapid increase in the estimated values. The auction will also feature a selection of Roman Pop Art with Mario Schifano, Tano Festa, Cesare Tacchi and Franco Angeli. Other highlights will be a 50s masterpiece by Tancredi and Guttuso’s grand Edicola of 1964.
