T he Royal Horticultural Halls, in London’s Westminster, will be the setting for the annual Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux tasting. We welcome you to explore over 100 distinguished Grands Crus Classés from the Left and Right Banks and Sauternes. This year’s tasting focuses entirely on the sensational Bordeaux 2015 vintage, which is already being compared to the acclaimed 2005, 2009 and 2010 vintages.
We begin with the climatic conditions in 2015, which are all important in explaining the vintage’s success. A hot and dry June and July moved into heavy rainfall in August which helped produce an extremely healthy and ripe harvest. The resulting wines perfectly balance elegance and finesse with intensely complex fruit. Standout appellations that have benefitted the most from these conditions are Pomerol, Margaux and Pessac-Léognan, all of which will be showing exceptional examples at this tasting.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect when tasting wines is being able to compare a number of properties from a single vintage, in one sitting. One is able to consider how the châteaux approached the conditions of a single harvest and how each of them has communicated the characteristics of the grapes at their disposal. As a rare treat the owners, and representatives, of each château will be pouring their wines and sharing their thoughts, and insights, into this stunning vintage.
Last but not least, we are excited to be able to leave our inimitable Sotheby’s ‘stamp’ on this year’s Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux tasting. We welcome guests to sample our free Champagne bar, indulge in some seriously decadent canapés (trust me, I have tried them!) all whilst being entertained by a live bossa nova band.
The London Wine team look forward to seeing you on 17 October.
