Biography
Julian is Head of Tax, Heritage and UK Museums and the Fiduciary Client Group Europe. He leads the team in London which assists clients (from individual collectors through to national museums) with the special UK tax exemptions for heritage property. He works closely with Sotheby’s wider network of professional advisers – notably, lawyers, accountants, wealth managers and fiduciaries - partnering with them, to bring the full range of Sotheby’s expertise into play for them and for their clients.
In addition to tax guidance, Julian also helps clients navigate the UK’s export control rules. He regularly appears before the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art on behalf of clients whose property is being considered as a potential “national treasure”.
Julian is a lawyer and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Prior to joining Sotheby’s in 2024, his legal career began when he qualified as a solicitor and worked at distinguished London law firms. These included the firm then known as Charles Russell and, subsequently, Forsters, where he became a partner. Later, Julian joined Royal Bank of Canada and worked for the bank’s wealth management business. He held a variety of roles with a focus on thought leadership and business development.
During his career, Julian has served as trustee of a number of charitable bodies, encompassing the heritage, medical and education sector.
