3 parts in one, folio (300 x 201mm.), half-title, two titles within engraved border, third title with engraved device depicting a ship and four ports, engraved portrait of the author, 31 double-page engraved plates, with blank leaf g4 at end of third section, contemporary vellum, lacking the 5 folding plates and 6 folding maps, some staining, one plate damaged and repaired, upper hinge broken; sold not subject to return


An important work on the sea routes of west Africa, Brazil, India, and the East and West Indies, together with Linschoten's account of his travels in the Orient.

PROVENANCE:

Ernest Mason Satow, British Legation, Yedo, bookplate. Sir Ernest Satow (1843-1929) was a career diplomat whose first posting was in Japan (Yedo is modern Tokyo) and he was a founding member of the Asiatic Society of Japan.
