showing the bearded composer, three-quarter face, wearing a suit with watch and chain, by E. Kozics of Pressburg, overall size 16 x 11cm, inscription dated Vienna, 1 January 1886, small stain to lower outer corner of border


This handsome portrait was taken in Pressburg, then part of Hungary, known locally as Pozsony, now Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. Brahms made frequent visits to the city, performing as a conductor and pianist.
