Cramer, Livres illustrés, n° 108.

"My father, before going to the temple, stooped and breathless, searches for the prayer books for my mother and, addressing her, shows her the dog-eared pages. ‘So, from here to there’. Sitting at the table, he underlines the chosen pages with a pencil, with his fingernails. In a corner, he writes: ‘start from here’. Next to a touching passage he marks: ‘cry’. Elsewhere: ‘Listen to the cantor’. And mama went to the temple, assured that she would not shed tears in vain but only where necessary" (Marc Chagall, Ma vie, 1957, p. 58-59).

"This childhood memory of Chagall already reveals the special, indivisible link between the book and daily life, between text and image, between the written and the visual, which proves essential in the work of Marc Chagall." (Meret Meyer, Marc Chagall, les livres illustrés, 1995, p. 7).
