Description

Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais

La folle journée, ou le mariage de Figaro, comédie en cinq actes, en prose. [Kehl]: la Société littéraire-typographique, 1785

8vo (219 x 132mm.), half-title, 5 engraved plates after Saint-Quentin, final errata leaf, contemporary mottled calf, flat spine gilt, red edges, binding rubbed, spine chipped

This edition was produced in Beaumarchais' own printshop, established in Kehl to avoid French censorship, and which also produced the problematic works of Voltaire. The play had been written in 1781 and banned soon after; Beaumarchais amended the text and the ban was removed in 1784, two years before Mozart's opera (see lot 40 for the first edition of the music).
