Description
the pierced backs with a design incorporating quatrefoils and C-scrolls, the concave seats above square legs
The elegantly pierced and scrolled chair back in the present lot corresponds to a 1759 ‘hall chair’ pattern in Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, 3rd edition, 1762, plate XVIII.
Other hall chairs related to this pattern are in the collection of the Earls of Pembroke at Wilton House, Salisbury, to whom Chippendale supplied furniture.
A pair with similar backs was sold from David McAlpine’s Collection at Fawley House, Sotheby’s, 14 Octobver 2003, lot 77 (£27,000) and another two pairs, en suite with the previous, sold Christie’s London, 25 November 2004, lots 221, 222, (£22,705 and £17,925).
