Description
On wide spreading bases with a wide central drip-pan, later chased and gilded, fully marked near the sockets and with lions passant on the underside of the bases,

This exceptionally rare form of candlestick is seen with only two further pairs: one with the same maker's mark and hallmarked for London, 1653 (Christie's, London, 30 July 1952, lot 188); and another larger pair in the Kremlin Armoury, maker's mark an escallop, London, 1663 (illustrated in Jackson, C.; An Illustrated History of English Plate, London; 1911; Vol.II; p.852).
