Composers

Collection of 14 photographic portraits of composers, including Johann Strauss II, Wagner, Richard Strauss and Mahler, comprising:


Strauss II, Johann. Cabinet-style photograph of the composer inscribed and signed by Strauss ("in aufrichtiger Verehrung...Johann Strauss"), with a three-bar autograph musical quotation from the overture to Die Fledermaus, by Bergamasco, overall size 21.5 x 16cm, framed and glazed, no date [1874 or later], some browning, a few small scratches, small crease slightly affecting signature, fading to signature.

Wagner, Richard. Three cabinet-style photographs (by Elliott & Fry of London and Ghémar Frères of Brussels), and two carte-de-visite-style photographs, one inscribed on the reverse in an unidentified hand "Geschenk von Frau Minna Wagner geb. Planer 1862. Dresden".

Hanslick, Eduard. Carte-de-visite-style photograph, by J. Löwy of Vienna, signed below the image and on the reverse ("Dr Eduard Hanslick"), 1887 or later.

Strauss, Richard. Fine postcard photographic portrait showing the composer in middle-age, signed ("DRichardStrauss") and dated below the image, mounted, framed and glazed, overall size 21.3 x 16.4cm, the postcard addressed to Anton Müller-Wischin in Marquartstein, mentioning the vocal score of Intermezzo, Garmisch, 26 August 1925; with another signed, loose, postcard photographic portrait of the composer, no date [1911?].

Mahler, Gustav. Two photographic portraits, showing the younger and older composer, one by Mertens, Mai & Cie of Vienna, stamped 1906, the other with a manuscript entry on the reverse ("Geherte [sic] Herrn Richard Specht - / "Erinnerung auf den attentat", / Representative New York / "Musical Courier"); and a printed concert programme for the Benefit of Widows and Orphans of Sailors, signed by Mahler ("Gustav Mahler"), 24 October 1910, and a printed advertisement for a concert in Munich on 24 March 1897 conducted by Mahler ("VIII. (letztes) Kaim-Konzert"), 2 pages, edges frayed and repaired.

Puccini, Giacomo. One postcard photographic portrait inscribed and signed ("alla gentili Signora Elsa Pick...Ricordo di Giacomo Puccini"), 1923; with a signed postcard with a tiny photographic portrait laid down, 1913, and an inscribed paper visiting card.

Ellington, Duke. Magazine photographic portrait, inscribed and signed ("To my friend Paul goodluck Duke Ellington"), no date.

The recipient of the inscribed postcard photograph of Richard Strauss was the painter Anton Müller-Wischin (1865-1949), whose fine oil painting of the composer dates from 1937. See lot 000.
