Two multicoloured gold boxes, Paris, 1765 and 1775


the first, Paris, 1765, of four-coloured gold, the lid centred with an oval medallion chased with a seated gardener next to his wheelbarrow and a basket of fruit and flowers before a classical façade, below a bow and ribbon, the ground richly chased with scrollwork and flowers, chased arch border, the sides chased with medallions of a hen and her chicks, a turkey in front of a farm house and other birds, the base with a chased medallion representing herons, maker's mark no longer visible, charge and rubbed discharge mark for Jean-Jacques Prevost (1762-1768), Paris date letter B for 1765, 7 cm., 2 3/4 in. wide; the second Jean-Bernard Cherrier, Paris, 1775, the lid centred with two rose-gold turtle doves on Cupid’s crossed bow and quiver, within chased and engraved zig zag border and diaper engine-turning, the sides further decorated with dividers formed of graduating stylised scales within c-scrolls, charge and discharge mark of Jean-Baptiste Fouache (1774-1780), Paris date letter M for 1775,the rim numbered: 1, 6.8cm., 2 5/8 in. wide
