Description

Property of an Italian private collection

A two-coloured gold and enamel bonbonniere, Paris, 1762-68, and a small gold and enamel box, probably Hanau, circa 1785

the first, circular, the lid centred with an enamel plaque painted with two putti en grisaille on a pink background, within rose gold locket frame and pierced vine leaf border, on a polished gold ground engraved with borders of sprigs, leaves and waves, the base centred with a circular floral ornament, root wood lining, maker's mark illegible, charge and discharge mark of Jean-Jacques Prevost; the second, oval, the lid applied with an enamel plaque painted with a seated young boy en grisaille against a pink background with trees, within a paste frame, on a chased ground with floral foliage and c-scroll border on matted ground, rubbed maker's mark TC within sprigs incuse,

7cm., 2¾in diameter; 5cm., 2 in. wide

It is highly likely that the smaller box in the present also belongs to a group of multicolour gold and enamel boxes made in Hanau by different constellations of makers using sets of marks such as AC, MP, MC etc, probably with links to the Hanau bijoutier Daniel Marchand (see the catalogue note for lot in this sale). For another small gold and enamel snuff box of Hanau origin with very similar decoration and of similar size and working of the gold ground, the lid later enamelled in blue and pink, struck with the maker's mark MC incuse, see Sotheby's sale of The Family Collection of the late Countess Mountbatten of Burma, London, 24 March 2021, lot 314. A second comparable in terms of size and style, with the maker's mark of Daniel Marchand was sold Uppsala Auktionskammare, 7 December 2017, lot 846.
