Description

Anthologia Graeca. Florilegium diversorum epigrammatum in septem libros. [Device] Ανθολογια διαφορων επιγραμματων... [Venice]: Aldo Manuzio [and Andrea Torresano, between 1518 and 1521?]

A reissue of the 1503 Greek Anthology with a reset title-page and a reset quire A; the rest of the text seems to conform to the sheets of the 1503 edition. This copy is unfortunately lacking the final leaf which presumably would have contained the colophon.

The device on the title-page, A6, was used once in 1514 and then again in 1518-1524.

8vo (149 x 93 mm). Greek type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: A-M8 NN10: 290 leaves (lacking NN1 & NN10). Woodcut Aldine device (A6) on title-page. (Small hole in B1 with slight loss of text, wormholes at head of gutter, title-page detached, final quire detached.)

binding: Seventeenth-century calf (probably English) (157 x 97 mm), blind and gilt fillet border, gilt centerpiece, spine gilt in compartments, red edges. (Binding slightly rubbed, spine torn and defective.)

provenance: "Mr Windham's copy", note on flyleaf, presumably William Windham the politician (1750-1810), whose library was sold in London on 20 July 1810, lot 46 (described as the 1503 edition) — James Bailey (1791-1864), of Trinity College Cambridge, inscription on title-page dated 1841 — Thomas Ewart Marston (1904-1984), bookplate. acquisition: Purchased from C.A. Stonehill, Inc. New Haven, 1962. references: Variant, not mentioned by Renouard
