Cataneo, Pietro. I quattro primi libri di architettura di Pietro Cataneo senese: nel primo de' quali si dimostrano le buone qualità de' siti, per l'edificationi delle città & castella, sotto diversi disegni: nel secondo, quanto si aspetta alla materia per la fabrica: nel terzo si veggono varie materie di tempii, & di che forma si convenga fare il principale della città: & dalle loro piante, come ancora dalle piante delle città & castella, ne sono tirati gli alzati per ordine di prospettiva: nel quarto si dimostrano per diverse piante l'ordine di più palazzi & casamenti, venendo dal palazzo regale & signorile, come di honorato gentiluomo, sino alle case di persone private. First edition of Pietro Cataneo's architectural treatise, a tall and crisp copy. Cataneo, from Siena, dedicated this work to his fellow Sienese Enea Piccolomini, who at the time was commander of the French and Italian forces in Siena, driving out the Spanish occupiers in 1552, after which Cataneo worked on strengthening the fortifications of Sienese towns.

Folio (343 x 239 mm). Roman type, 49 lines plus headline. collation: [*²] A-O⁴: 58 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title- page and final verso, woodcut initials, woodcut illustrations (some full-page, those on L1 & 4 showing across the fold of the sheet). (Small area of damp-staining at foot of a few leaves, small wormholes in last two leaves and in lower cover.)

binding: Near-contemporary limp vellum (350 x 245 mm), stubs from four pairs of alum-tawed ties, title lettered in manuscript along spine, plain edges. (Binding slightly soiled, spine slightly worn with vellum split across sewing supports.)
