Description
Armandus de Bellovisu [Armand de Belvézer]. Declaratio difficilium terminorum theologiae, philosophiae atq. logicae D. Armandi Bellovisii artium, & sacrae theologiae doctoris praeclarissimi. Opus scientiarum studiosis utilissimum, & nunc demum ab innumeris erroribus expurgatum. Cum duplici indice: altero capitum, altero rerum memorabilium. Venice: Aldo Manuzio, 1586
An uncut copy of this fourteenth-century handbook of technical terminology in theology, philosophy and logic.
The final leaf contains a list of Aldo the younger's available publications, arranged in alphabetical order. The untrimmed edges show that the sheets were printed with a wider margin (perhaps 20mm. wider) for the first four leaves of the folded sheet. The list includes, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the monumental Aldine Galen from 1525 and the 1519 Statius (see R. Hirsch, "The art of selling books: notes on three Aldus catalogues, 1586-1592", PBSA 1948/1949, 83-101).
8vo (170 x 117 mm). Roman type, 38 lines plus headline, uncut. collation: a4 b-d8 A-Z8 Aa4: 216 leaves (d8 blank). Woodcut Aldine device on title-page, woodcut initials and headpieces, note in French pasted to flyleaf about the Aldine device. (Small stain on title-page.)
binding: Contemporary limp vellum (178 x 120 mm), paper label on spine, stubs from two pairs of ties. (Spine with traces of old lettering and paint, label torn.)
provenance: Mr. Maladier, bookplate. acquisition: Purchased from E.K. Schreiber, New York, 1992. references: UCLA 974; Edit16 3048; Renouard 237/1
