Met Gala 2018: The Jewels They Wore

By Stephanie Sporn

Crowns, crosses and gold were to be expected at this year’s Met Gala, which celebrated The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. But saying the star-studded attendees brought their jewelry A-game would be an absolute understatement. Jewels not only decked their arms, necks and fingers but also the gowns, capes and trains themselves. Statement headpieces paid homage to religious icons and Catholicism’s flair for finery, as illustrated by Diane Kruger’s custom Philip Treacy and Tasaki Atelier fleur-de-lis and South Sea pearl headpiece, shown above. With nearly every celebrity donning dazzling jewels, we selected 20 of our favorite, must-see looks.

Rihanna

Met Gala co-chair (and reigning queen) wore a grand, Heavenly Bodies-inspired Maison Margiela Artisanal look by John Galliano. Perfectly paired with her Papal mitre-inspired headpiece was her circa 1934 Cartier Collection crucifix pendant.

Zöe Kravitz

Kravitz paired her leggy Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello gown with Jacob & Co. earrings featuring approximately 100 carats of pear-shaped morganites and ten carats of diamonds.

Mindy Kaling

Kaling spotlighted Greek designers in her jaw-dropping gown by Vassilis Zoulias and oversized crown by Pericles Kondylatos.

Laura Dern

Sotheby’s loves the sculptural glamour of jewelry by Alexander Calder, and we were excited to see Laura Dern sporting a vintage Calder necklace from Stephen Russell Jewelry with her custom Proenza Schouler dress.

Lena Waithe

Waithe’s Carolina Herrera ensemble has been one of the most beloved Met Gala looks, but her Ravenna and Theodora brooches by Verdura should not be overlooked.

Sienna Miller

Seen here with her sister Savannah Miller, Sienna Miller paired her Louis Vuitton gown with not one but two crowns by Fred Leighton.

Karen Elson

Also wearing Fred Leighton jewels was Karen Nelson, who looked radiant in an emerald-green Michael Kors gown.

Solange

Always one to rock a unique look on the red carpet, Solange combined Ofira Jewels hoops, cuffs and bangles with Lorraine Schwartz rings to complete her Iris van Herpen Couture look.

Uma Thurman

This dazzling diamond, emerald and sapphire necklace and earring set was created by Italian high jewelry designer Giampiero Bodino. Thurman paired Bodino jewels with a Gabriela Hearst gown featuring more than 2,500 sweet water pearls on its train.

Emilia Clarke

The Met Gala virtually doubled as a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show – Emilia Clarke was one of several stars to don the designer from head to toe.

Blake Lively

Equally stunning, Lively’s jewel-toned Versace gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels made for one of the evening’s most memorable looks. Her halo was made with more than 100 carats of champagne diamonds, not to mention her Colombian emerald and diamond dagger earrings, ruby rings and her own engagement ring, also by Schwartz.

Kerry Washington

Washington was a bronzed beauty in Ralph Lauren with a gold headpiece and diamond rings by Lorraine Schwartz.

Eiza Gonzalez

Like Kruger, Gonzalez paired Prabal Gurung with jewels by Tasaki Atelier.

Gisele Bündchen

Eco-friendly fashion has never looked better: Gisele wore a sustainable Versace gown with Sabba diamond earrings from FD Gallery.

Bella Hadid

Hadid wore Gareth Pugh Studio with jewelry by Chrome Hearts, whom the model collaborated with on her own collection in 2017.

Brooke Shields

Shields was the vision of elegance in a dark blue gown by Zac Posen and Tiffany & Co. jewels.

Kendall Jenner

Also in Tiffany & Co. was Kendall Jenner who wore platinum and diamond earrings from the new Tiffany Paper Flowers collection.

Amber Heard

Heard wore her Carolina Herrera dress with jewels by Beladora, Jennifer Meyer and Dean Davidson.

Jennifer Lopez

Wearing jewels by Tiffany & Co., Jennifer Lopez and beau Alex Rodriguez wore custom Balmain for a cause – their designs will be auctioned to support (RED).

Gigi Hadid

Like Solange, the Versace-clad Hadid wore jewels by Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira, including a 50-carat champagne and intense pink diamond earring set by Schwartz.
