The concluding sale of a stellar 2014 for the European Sculpture and Works of Art department at Sotheby’s saw strong results for large marble carvings and some of the foremost sculptors of the early 20th century, such as Paolo Troubetzkoy and Adolfo Wildt. The latter’s Vergine sold for an impressive £146,500.
Sotheby’s unrivalled sale of pre-war European sculpture is led by a selection of figurative works from Barcelona’s Museu Europeau d’Art Modern, including Affortunato Gori’s Oriental Dancer. The sale traces the history of sculpture from the exuberance of the 19th century through to the clean modernity of the 20th century. Highlights include a dazzling 19th-century version of Antonio Canova’s Hebe and Pietro Calvi’s Orientalist busts of Aleydah and Ben Ali-Ben Ladiar.
