Catalogue Note

This charming model, created by Canova in 1809, was envisaged by the banker Domenico Manzoni to adorn a tempietto in his native Forli. However, the marble never reached his home when it was finished five years later. In 1830 it was sold to the Russian ambassador in Rome. Discussing the statue in 1824, Leopoldo Cicognara commented favourably on its sweetness of movement.
