Sotheby’s London Jewellery Department is proud to present the personal jewellery collection of the late Michael Wellby. Born into a family of silver dealers, Mr. Wellby developed his interest in period jewellery by ardently collecting pieces for his wife, Joy. The collection includes exemplary pieces from five centuries, which display both his interest in antique pieces as well as his perceptive eye in selecting high quality pieces from some of the world’s greatest jewellers, as well as items of rarity, such as the diamond devant de corsage from the late 18th century.
It is a rare occurrence where we are in the presence of such a wide range of antique jewels which have been collected by such a dedicated connoisseur. Mr Wellby has curated a collection encompassing some of the great goldsmiths of the last five centuries; from important Renaissance jewels, to the rare Georgian devant de corsage, exquisite creations of 19th Century novelty and sentimentality, to the organic forms of Art Nouveau and the dramatic creations of Art Deco.
Prices range from £400 to £60,000 and display examples from the 16th-20th centuries.
