Sotheby's Russian paintings day sale features fine and decorative oils and works on paper from the 18th to 20th centuries. Highlights of the auction include some striking portraits, including a painting by Sergei Malyutin of his son, two important portraits by Ilya Repin, an abstract 1927 work by Pavel Tchelitchew and some sanguine portraits by Alexander Yakovlev from Japan, Mongolia and Afghanistan.
Franz Roubaud's Caravan Advancing Through the Snow is among the most impressive works by this artist to be offered at auction in recent years. We are also delighted to offer a large early oil by Abram Arkhipov which was shown at Nadezhda Dobychina's salon in Petrograd, and a rare set of watercolours by Natalya Goncharova which were part of the renowned Larionov/Goncharova exhibition at the Musee d'art moderne de Paris in 1963. A highlight of the contemporary section is Oleg Vassiliev's evocative oil painting, Mist. We look forward to welcoming you to our galleries when our pre-sale exhibition opens on 3 June.
